Every edge does a different job
The head isn't one shape. Three contours are cut into it, and matching the right one to the right part of your face is the difference between a nice massage and an actual result.
The long flat edge
Built for the jaw and the neck. Enough length to cover chin-to-ear in one unbroken pass, which is what you want — short choppy strokes break the drainage path.
The deep curve
Cups the cheekbone and follows the socket. It sits flush instead of skipping, so pressure spreads evenly rather than digging in at one point.
The shallow notch
For under the eye and around the nose. Small contact area, very little pressure — this is the one part of the face where less is genuinely more.
Where each pass goes
Tap a zone. Direction, pressure and count all change depending on where you are — and getting the neck wrong undoes the rest.
Arrows show stroke direction, not pressure.
Your first fourteen nights
Almost everyone who has a bad time with retinol had it in week one, because they went nightly on day one. Alternate nights for a fortnight and your skin never gets the chance to complain.
Four things people get wrong
All four are easy to fix, and all four are the reason someone occasionally says it did nothing for them.
What people do: press hard, expecting force to move more fluid. Skin goes red and stays red.
Instead: enough pressure to move the skin, not to compress it. Lymph vessels sit just under the surface — pushing harder pushes straight past them.
What people do: use a thin layer, then wonder why the edge drags and tugs.
Instead: if it isn't gliding, you need more cream, not less pressure. Drag is the one thing that can actually stretch delicate skin.
What people do: sweep up the neck because "lifting" sounds like it should go up.
Instead: the neck always goes down. The nodes that drain your face sit at the base of it — upward strokes send fluid back where it came from.
What people do: finish the face, put the cap back on, go to bed.
Instead: always finish down the neck. You've spent four minutes moving fluid toward the exit; the last minute is the one that lets it leave.
Where it sits in your routine
It goes on last at night, on dry skin. What matters more is what you put on either side of it.
Pairs well with
- Hyaluronic acid — underneath, on dry skin, as a buffer
- Ceramide moisturisers — on top, on nights skin feels tight
- Vitamin C — in the morning, not the same routine
- SPF 30+ — every morning without exception, not negotiable
Don't layer the same night
- AHAs and BHAs — glycolic, lactic, salicylic. Alternate nights instead
- A second retinoid — prescription tretinoin, adapalene, another retinol
- Benzoyl peroxide — use it in the morning if you need it
- Strong vitamin C serums — fine in the same week, not the same night
